Every last dollar counts as there are many groups attempting to raise money for various causes and it is getting more and more difficult to build up the funds for Sofiana’s family. We thank you all for your support so far and we look forward to seeing you again at future events.
WES now works under the umbrella of the Anglican Church in order to speed up the process of bringing Sofiana’s family to Canada. This provides us with a wonderful support network and advice from a very experienced refugee sponsorship group. Through this connection, we are also able to offer tax receipts for donations of $50 or more; anyone wishing to obtain a tax receipt for their donation should make out their cheque to “St Philip-by-the-Sea Anglican Church” and write “WES sponsorship” on the memo line.
November 2017 Update:
It has been an interesting fall for WES as we are still getting to know each other and become confident in our pursuit of the $50,000 that is needed to keep the family in Turkey and bring them to Nanaimo.
In August WES held a second garage sale, followed by a hotdog sale which raised over $200. It was held at the Country Grocer in South Nanaimo. This supermarket is very supportive of fund raising ventures by providing all the food, the bar-b-q , the propane as well as various condiments.
After this the WES group began in earnest to prepare for the Silent Auction and Dinner. Local businesses were very generous and artisans donated beautiful works of art. This event was held at the Nanaimo Yacht Club on October 27th. Two of our members played a wonderful selection of music on a classical guitar and a viola. Sofiana gave a very moving talk about her family’s situation and received a standing ovation. The Two Chefs’ Affair provided a great meal and many of our guests bought drinks from our bar, which served beers from White Sails Brewing Company. There was a very varied collection of things on which to bid in the Silent Auction. We are very pleased to inform you that everyone’s efforts brought in $6, 202!
Already there has been quite a lot of interest shown in our next event at Bees Knees Community Café on January 27th at 6:00pm. This will be a Persian Evening, including dinner and dancing, and guests can bring their favourite beverage to enjoy with the meal. Tickets will soon be available at Bees Knees or via WES.
Later in 2018 there will be a Beer and Burger Night at a pub. There will be more details sent to all members later.
WES also has plans to host a Painting Evening (helped by a glass of wine!) with a local artist. Again, more details will be sent to our members nearer the time.
